I thought I'd start another thread on this topic since there are so many choices! After 12 years of flying I finally decided it was time to start protecting my hearing a little more. I'm SO glad that I did and wish I had make the investment earlier! One unexpected benefit....I don't get nearly as fatigued as I did without a noise canceling headset. I've flown legs without it and I can really tell a difference in how I feel after several hours.
My criteria were simple:
Price (I didn't want to pay $1,000 or more like some of the high end models)
It had to be noise canceling
FAA TSO certified
I wasn't thrilled about the idea of batteries
I wanted to still be able to hear the Captain and some airplane noise but cut out the background / wind noise
I settled on the Telex 850. It's been the number one best seller for professional pilots for a long time. I like the fact that it gives you a nice 12db of noise cancellation without any batteries....just plug it in and it uses ships power. It's light, comfortable and small so it fits easily in my flight bag without taking up any extra space (It comes with a carrying case that I never use). I've had it for 5 years and am 100% satisfied. I did have to buy a set of replacement ear pads after 4 years when they started to wear a little but they were easy to find online and replace. They cancel "most" of the background noise in the cockpit but I can still easily talk to other crew members.
